DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 6/1/2010
June 1, 2010 in DVD/BD Releases
Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me. I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person. At least I’m not spending money on heroine. New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations. Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

Alice in Wonderland
Tim Burton used to be my hero. Then he made Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I had hoped since Sweeney Todd, he had started to turn around and start becoming relevant again. Unfortunately Tim Burton is still on the “Re-make” wagon (Sweeney Todd was a musical) and has no original voice anymore.
Here with Alice in Wonderland his visual flair flourishes, but the story is lackluster. Worth seeing for the visuals if you’re willing to forgive the drab proceedings. [Amazon]
The Wolfman
A victim of studio interference, The Wolfman could have been an interesting remake. However, when it his theaters, Joe Johnston’s film was not received well. It was a jumbled and rushed mess that just kind of hung there. Now, Johnston has his chance to redeem the inferior theatrical cut with his director’s cut. However, although I’m hearing it’s the better version of the film (with the first act vastly improved), it all still falls apart at the end.
Worth checking out for some great practical effects and fantastic gore. If you can buy that Benicio Del Toro is an Englishman with Anthony Hopkins for a father, you may just take the plunge and buy it. I’ll rent, thank you. [Amazon]
