31 Days of Halloween: Night of the Creeps

Category : 31 Days of Halloween

Day 5
Night of the Creeps

Detective Cameron: I got good news and bad news, girls. The good news is your dates are here.
Sorority Sister: What’s the bad news?
Detective Cameron: They’re dead.

I think I’m one of the biggest Monster Squad fans out there, so when I found out the director of Monster Squad (Fred Dekkar) had directed a zombie flick, I knew I needed to search it out. The problem was, Night of the Creeps was only available on VHS or bootleg DVD so I never was able to check it out until FEARnet came to my rescue about 2 years ago. Since then it’s come out on DVD/Blu Ray and has quickly become a staple movie for October.

Normally, when you finally see a movie you missed as a kid you’re left wondering “That was it?!” Not the case with Night of the Creeps.  In fact, the more I watch it, the more I love it.  The cast of characters is superb.  I can’t recall too many movies where all 4 leads are memorable.  First, we have Jason Lively as the love-sick Chris who has a crush on Jill Whitlow (Cynthia).  He’s aided in his quest to win Cynthia’s heart by his smart ass friend J.C. played brilliantly by Steve Marshall.  The icing on the cake is Tom Atkins as Detective Cameron.

Night of the Creeps is insanely quotable (mainly Tom Atkins‘ one liners) and pure fun to watch.  It doesn’t take itself seriously and the sharp wit of the script elevates this B movie above most others from that time period.

Watch it, love it.  I’d also recommend it as a Double Feature with the James Gunn directed, similarly themed (although the director had no idea) Slither.
