THE CHANGELING is a film that has been an influence on many “haunted house” movies I’ve seen recently. Most notably with the seance scenes. The Seance Scene in THE CHANGELING is probably the best part of the movie. The rest is a haunted house mystery slog that really doesn’t amount to anything special.
George C. Scott brings a presence to his character that is clearly more than what was on the page. The rest of the film is pretty dull but has fragments of interesting moments. I’m sure in 1980 it was fresh and original. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many haunted house films for this to leave a permanent mark.
