DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 10/05/2010

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me. I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person. At least I’m not spending money on heroine. New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations. Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

Splice

If you’re a fan of creature flicks and original stories, Splice is a must-own.  Directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube), movies like Splice don’t come around too often.  I still haven’t seen it, but this is a total blind buy for me based on the creature design, the actors, the director and what I’ve heard of the score.  The only special feature listed is A Director’s Playground: Vicenzo Natali on the Set of Splice and I’m hoping there’s some great stuff on there.  Either way, I’m excited to own this and am happy to support Vincenzo Natali as a filmmaker.

New DVD/Blu Ray Podcast in the Works – The GeekCouch: Collector’s Edition

This is just a “formal” announcement of my new podcast “The GeekCouch: Collector’s Edition” that will record it’s first episode this weekend.

I was searching for a podcast specifically geared toward new Blu Ray and DVD releases and didn’t find any at all.  This will be my answer to that.

I’m currently searching for a capable/likeable/intelligent/funny co-host, so stay tuned for that announcement.  I may just have a guest host every week, or may have a couple co hosts that rotate throughout the month.  We’ll see.

This is an exciting opportunity and I’m looking forward to sharing it with all of you!

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Ever wonder what 300 would have been like if it was an Unrated TV Series on a cable network, took place in Ancient Rome, and the producers sprinkled some Skin-a-Max overtones? Look no further! It’s Starz Original Series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand!

This is one of these series that is so over-the-top you have to love it.  It’s like HBO’s Rome spliced with 300 spliced with Gladiator, and that’s a good thing.  So, why buy? Because for a blu ray release, it’s pretty dang cheap at $30. [Amazon]

Robin Hood

Ridley Scott gets a second chance to win us over with his Robin Hood epic thanks to this Unrated Director’s Cut release.  For the most part, it works.  The Director’s Cut is a much better movie thanks to some expanded storytelling.  Certain events don’t seem so rushed  (How did the kids from Lord of the Flies get dropped into a Robin Hood story?) while the relationship between Robin Longstride and Marian flows a little better.  For an expanded look at this blu ray set, read my review.

If you haven’t seen this yet, Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood is at least worth a rental.  If you saw it in theaters and were disappointed because the marketing set you up for a different film, give the Director’s Cut a chance.  It’s still not the classic Robin Hood story, but it is a great medieval epic that does a solid job setting up the Robin Hood legend.  Hopefully there’s a second film.  Then this film can be fully appreciated. Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton used to be my hero. Then he made Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I had hoped since Sweeney Todd, he had started to turn around and start becoming relevant again. Unfortunately Tim Burton is still on the “Re-make” wagon (Sweeney Todd was a musical) and has no original voice anymore.

Here with Alice in Wonderland his visual flair flourishes, but the story is lackluster. Worth seeing for the visuals if you’re willing to forgive the drab proceedings. [Amazon]

Daybreakers

From the wonderful example of “World Building” done right, to the post apocalyptic setting, and intense action, Daybreakers was a breath of fresh air for me.  Sure, it’s not the most original plot ever.  Plus, vampires are way overdone these days (fuck you, Twilight).  But from the first scene of this flick, I was hooked.  I left the theater wanting to watch this little piece of original genre entertainment again. Product DetailsThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Terry Gilliam is hit or miss with most audiences, though I’m always up for checking out his films at least once.  He’s responsible for some classics such as Monty Python’s and the Holy Grail, Brazil and 12 Monkeys.  Here, we have Heath Ledger‘s Swan Song.  His untimely death in the middle of filming this movie presented some challenges for Gilliam, and that along makes this movie worth checking out.  Cleverly using Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to replace Ledger is a ballsy move, and one worth applauding. Pirate Radio

I almost pursued a career in radio but then realized there is absolutely no money in it, so any movie regarding radio peaks my interest.  Pirate Radio tells the story of a young man in 1966 Britain who is sent by his mother with his uncle in order to give his life direction.  However, the uncle runs a pirate rock station. The cast alone makes me want to check this out.  Pirate Radio stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Nick Frost and Kenneth Branagh.  (buy on Amazon, or buy the uncut UK version at Amazon.co.uk)
