In July of 2008, my podcast IndieUprising was doing pretty well. I was broadcast on XNDRadio and because of that I was given tons of “professional” sounding bumpers and stings. I had the opportunity to speak to Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It. I’m still pretty happy with this interview and am glad to see Evan has continued in his success with his project. Enjoy listening to this interview! I’d love to speak to him for a future Fireside Lounge podcast. You can currently get his book/7″ Life Is Suffering right now via Topshelf Records. Also, look for the upcoming full length Intersections out on September 24th via Triple Crown Records.
Show Notes:
Into It. Over It. Full Length Discography
52 Weeks: This is the project Evan was recording during the interview. I’m kicking myself for not buying the vinyl set.
[Digital | Vinyl]
12 Towns: I really dig the songwriting choices and themes that Evan chooses. This album is fantastic.
[Digital | CD | Vinyl]
Proper: After writing a song a week, and then a song inspired by cities, this album feels a little more “normal” regarding theme. Still a great album.

Tim was born in Taiwan, but at the age of 10, legally moved to Miami with his mother and sister, where they lived for seven years (with a good chunk of that time also spent in Ecuador) before a legal mess ensued, forcing them to return to Taiwan. They managed to make their way to Canada, and then back into the U.S., but were forced to live in fear and anonymity for nearly 20 years.
Now a legal citizen, Tim is finally ready to open up about this harrowing period of his life, starting with A Memories Chase. [Riot Act Media]
Due to a series of legal issues out of his hands, Timothy Den spent twenty years as an illegal immigrant in the United States. The problem was, being raised in the US, he had nowhere else he could call home. This week I speak to Tim about his band Ohvaur, their new full length album A Memories Chase and his incredible story.

The one thing I loved the most about doing the music podcast are the bands that have become some of my favorite all-time bands. Death Ships was one of those bands. Their album Seeds Of Devastation surprised me at how good it was. From the CD packaging to the music, this wasn’t amateur hour. Death Ships meant business. This was a good band. Immediately I knew I needed to interview Dan Maloney founding member and main songwriter of Death Ships. In December of 2006 that happened.

On October 17th, 2006 I spoke with Denton Adam about his band The Springs. I had friends in a band called Mourning September and they had been on tour together. This was when I had just started the podcast and I really loved The Springs’ tunes. Needless to say, you can tell I was a bumbling nervous wreck. I have no idea why. Denton doesn’t seem to be in a band any more, but he’s keeping buy running the Front Of House for the band The Dear Hunter and I believe he’s on the road right now with Nevershoutnever! for Warped! Tour. He’s also worked with Sum 41.

This week I resurrect a conversation I had with my old friend Danny Wolf. I’ve always loved his voice and the projects he’s been in. When I spoke with him back in October of 2006 his band Small Towns Burn A Little Slower were in the middle of recording their second album, So Begins The Test Of A Man. I still love this album. During the interview I also play one of my favorite songs of theirs, “Wait For Me Abbey Bernstein” off their first full length Morality As Home Entertainment. Danny now has a called Wrestling With Wolves. They have two tracks up on their Bandcamp page. I suggest you give them some love.

On August 7, 2007 I interviewed Chuck Daley about Deep Elm Records. At the time he was the “Promotional Director” for Deep Elm Records and I remember being pretty nervous leading up to this discussion. As you’ll hear, I had some technical difficulties and the audio quality of the conversation was a bit rough.
Chuck now runs Beartrap PR, a PR firm that handles a lot of bands on the East Coast. They provide about 75% of the tunes you hear on each week’s show. If you’re in a band and need someone to handle your PR…Chuck and Will over at Beartrap PR are your guys. They also run a record label, Tiny Engines. Check out ALL their bands. Great stuff.

Artist: On Being Human
Album: eVe
Label: Self Released
On Being Human is a band that appeared on my radar after I discovered their clever covers of video game themes on RetrowareTV.com with their web series “The Humans Are Coming.” The life they breathed into these themes (especially Metroid and Street Fighter) was impressive. Jumping off the momentum of this show, the band has released their new EP, eVe.
This isn’t the band’s first release, they’ve released a couple other EP’s as well as a 2010 full length To Light The Coals Of Our Hearts. Honestly, their 2010 album did nothing for me, however eVe is a HUGE step up from the blandness of that album. The songs on eVe are memorable, concise and seem to compliment one another. These songs are more akin to the band’s 2011 single Addicted which introduces a ferocity and edge missing from Coals. My favorite song on the EP, Dream Garden is a perfect example of this.
The rest of eVe seems to tone down some of that ferocity but substitutes some electronic elements and production value that work most of the time. While this EP is superbly commercial and will no doubt turn a lot of heads, some of the bite I’ve come to love from both the song “Addicted” and their “RetroWare” songs has been watered down. There are moments, as illustrated in the EP’s strongest track “Dream Garden” but the album as a whole leaves me somewhat wanting. Especially when it comes to the cover song on this EP.
While most people love covers, the band’s cover of Tears For Fears’ “Shout” is serviceable but to me, this is the EP’s lowest point and at almost 6 minutes the song wears out it’s welcome fast. eVe starts out strong, but unfortunately ends on a whimper making the EP feel unfinished.
Looking back at their discography, On Being Human’s 2013 EP eVe is their strongest music to date, a launching pad for bigger and better things. From here on out, On Being Human is more confident than ever and have only began to mine their potential.

]]>Artist: The End Of America
Album: Shakey
Label: Self Released
RIYL: Band Of Horses, Wilco
When I heard their debut album Steep Bay I knew the band The End Of America was something special. That album was recorded in 2010 in upstate New York at an isolated cabin. Founding members Brendon Thomas, James Downes and Trevor Leonard recorded the album live using only a two track, battery powered recorder. What they recorded was an impeccable achievement and still one of my all time favorite albums.
Fast forward to 2012, the band is still focused on organic songwriting and recording. The album title “Shakey” is a homage to Neil Young, who recorded most his albums live, with minimal rehearsal. Following in his footsteps, The End Of America did the same with this album. Over 7 days the recorded live, to tape with minimal rehearsal and as few takes as possible. The result is yet another astounding recording from the band.
This process gives an immediacy to the songs, beautiful imperfection and a snapshot of a true creativity. While the songs don’t grab me as much as their debut, Shakey is still a stunning achievement. The album consists of 5 full length songs broken up with an intro and interlude. Each song has it’s own personality and before you know it the album is over. Which brings me to my main complaint of both albums…when it’s over I wish there was more!
The End Of America are a true example of artistry in an industry that has very few pioneers left. The are proving that creativity can go a long way and, when used correctly, analog recording is far from being extinct. The band is mulling over releasing their music on vinyl and that seems to be the only way I’d want to experience their music. Until then, both albums from The End Of America are top notch, inexpensive and well worth your time and money.

The New Art History by Our Lost Infantry is a 36 minute musical movement in 9 parts. Still with me? Most bands who try this sort of approach to an album usually come across as pretentious assholes. Anyone a fan of Mars Volta? If you are, hear me out before you string me up. These rock-opera type albums usually come across as forced, silly and pretentious to the average music listener but embraced by other musicians. What sets Our Lost Infantry apart is the seamless blend of artistic integrity with infectious hooks, soaring vocal melodies and rousing harmonies.
Hailing from Aldershot, England the band locked themselves away for about six months writing this album. Emerging with a self-produced masterpiece, the band was signed to Deep Elm Records therefore unleashing The New Art History to discerning music aficionados worldwide. It’s a remarkable debut.
During it’s brisk 36 minutes, The New Art History packs a punch and is surprisingly epic. Even though it is technically one 36 minute song, Our Lost Infantry has crafted 9 memorable movements. All related, yet all original. It’s a feat that not many bands can pull off successfully. The New Art History is one work of art that can be enjoyed in pieces, but also as a whole. The album is neither pretentious nor forgettable and is more sweeping and epic than one would think.
Our Lost Infantry is Thom Ashworth on vocals, Joe Ashworth on bass, Matt Phelps on keys and Michael Parkin on drums. All contribute to the vocals during choruses and harmonies. The musicianship and vocals are so impeccable that I have added Our Lost Infantry to my “Must See Live” list, just to see if they can pull all this off live. If they can, I hope this band is filling arenas with their sounds in about 10 years.
Our Lost Infantry has created one of the finest releases of 2012. It’s an album that can be embraced by the elite audiophiles to the average music lover. From start to finish, The New Art History is an epic journey wrapped in a brief 36 minutes. Each piece of the album can be enjoyed separately, however, I’d suggest starting at the beginning and let the album grab hold and envelope you.

Artist: Big Awesome
Album: Birdfeeder EP
Label: Self Released
RIYL: Algernon Cadwallader, Minus The Bear, Samiam
With a name like Big Awesome it’s easy to assume they could be an Andrew WK party band. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Mixing melody with the grit of punk rock, Big Awesome’s EP takes hold and after four songs you wanting more.
Birdfeeder opens with the song “Grey’s Birthday” with John Blanken’s strong vocals accented by Colin Czeriwnski’s clean guitars and Tyler Giarratano’s driving drums, going to a birthday party never felt so important. It’s the perfect song to kick off a Friday night of debauchery.
The sense of urgency stays strong throughout the EP. Each song is a compliment to one another while maintaining their own personality and strengths. The EP’s second track “Birdfeeder” is driving, short and sweet accented by a steady bass line and complex clean guitars.
While there seems to be a simplicity to the overall melody there is a meticulous finesse to the song that most punk bands sacrifice for sheer power and drive. Big Awesome juggles raw emotion and power with intricate song writing, creating a sense of humanity with each track.
Big Awesome’s Birdfeeder EP is a snapshot into great things to come. The band is getting ready to record a full length album and I have high expectations. Never judge a band by it’s name because you may be missing out one something groundbreaking and new. Big Awesome is shaping up to be one of my favorite bands of 2012, making me love their name even more.

]]>Artist: Dandelion War
Album: We Were Always Loyal To Lost Causes
Label: Deep Elm Records
RIYL: Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Ros, Appleseed Cast, Moonlit Sailor, Antlers
It’s easy to get lost in the wasteland of post-rock, ambient, shoegaze bands. They seem to have saturated the music scene in the past few years, I blame Explosions In The Sky and Friday Night Lights. While most of these bands are capable in creating lush, ambient landscapes, most of these sounds bleed from one band to another making it hard for anyone to stand out. Enter Oakland, California’s Dandelion War. While they are very much in the same vein of these bands, Dandelion War seem to take the best elements of this sound and craft them into something wholly their own.
Their sophomore effort, We Were Always Loyal To Lost Causes is an exquisite barrage of ambient landscapes with Larry Fernández’ vocals floating over each meticulously crafted note. Larry’s vocals are a welcomed departure from the falsetto of bands like Sigur Ros and Radiohead, more like Chris Martin from Coldplay after some whiskey and cigarettes. Smothered in reverb, the vocals act as a part of this auditory painting and are never overpowering.
We Were Always Loyal To Lost Causes isn’t an album that lends itself to cherry picking certain tracks. The 55 minute album is meant to be enjoyed as a whole. Therefore, judging this album track-by-track doesn’t do it any favors. Listening to Dandelion War you find yourself slowing down to enjoy each moment they have to offer. The album is best enjoyed on long drives, contemplative writing sessions, sipping brandy and smoking a pipe.
Dandelion War rises above a genre that can get stale very quickly. While We Were Always Loyal To Lost Causes has it’s quiet and contemplative moments of beauty, but it can also crescendo into moments of melodic and meticulously crafted noise. Their blend of reverb-laden guitars, ghostly vocals and even electronic textures are very much welcomed in this sophomore effort. While We Were Always Loyal To Lost Causes should catapult Dandelion War into our collective, artistic consciousness.

Artist: The Keystone Kids
Album: Things Get Shaky
Label: Deep Elm Records
RIYL: The Postal Service, Stars, Death Cab For Cutie, Public Radio, Rilo Kiley
Pennsylvania natives, singer/songwriter/pianist Carly Comando and punk rocker Ryan O’Donnell (Yo Man Go) team up for a collaborative project called The Keystone Kids. Their debut EP Things Get Shaky is, in many ways, a fun and charming experiment with many highs. However, the electronic element drags the experiment down and as a whole making Things Get Shaky a frustrating experience depending on your musical preferences.
Things Get Shaky opens up very strong with the song “Crumble”, a combination of acoustic guitar, piano and drums balanced with wonderful vocal harmonies. Carly’s sweet voice carries the song accented by Ryan’s vocal harmonies. The interplay between the two throughout the album is a perfect match.
After a tone setting first song, things literally get shaky when we’re introduced to the electronic element of the album. The next two songs, “Mouth” and “What They’re Saying”, have a definite Postal Service vibe but the transition is jarring. While these songs are simple and have their own charm and wit and I’m sure many people will love this element; these drastic style changes between songs ultimately left me a tad frustrated.
With the fourth track, “Falling”, The Keystone Kids are back to live instruments. A song of heartbreak and longing, it’s fantastically executed. Again, the strength of Carly and Ryan as a duet is evident as “Falling” is easily my favorite song on this album. After the strongest track on Things Get Shaky we get the most forgettable song on the album, “Up All Night.” Luckily, this is the last of the electronic experimentation and The Keystone Kids end Things Get Shaky with two more strong entries, “Miles” and “44.”
While the musical change ups are hit-or-miss, lyrically I find no fault with Things Get Shaky. Themes of love, confusion and loss permeate this EP. I appreciate the honesty each song brings to the expansive journey a relationship can be. Carly and Ryan both bring relevant emotion and relatability to each song.
Things Get Shaky hits more than it misses and is worth taking a chance on. The album could almost be split into 2 EPs; one with the live instrument tunes and the other with the electronic songs. These two drastic styles sandwiched together in one album can be off-putting to some listeners as it was for me. However, take away those three electronic songs and you have 4 of my favorite songs of the year. I’m hoping the duo either abandon the electronic style or incorporates it more seamlessly on their next endeavor.

Show Notes:
Band #1: Tin Horn Prayer
• TIN HORN PRAYER (Denver, CO)
GET BUSY DYING 12″ LP - Bermuda Mohawk Productions (02/08/11)
——————————————————————————————————-
RIYL: Drag The River • Lawrence Arms • Murder By Death • Tom Waits • Uncle Tupelo • Hot Water Music
• BIO
——————————————————————————————————-
The concept of combining the gruffness and intensity of punk with Americana and frontier-based folk has been toyed with for many years within the indie rock scene, but very few have blended the two sounds as well as Tin Horn Prayer. Featuring ex-members of the Blackout Pact, Pinhead Circus, Only Thunder, Ghost Buffalo and Love Me Destroyer, Get Busy Dying is soulful and chalk-full of whiskey-soaked narratives that nod toward Lucero, Tom Waits and Murder By Death, but also stay true to the band members’ post-punk roots. If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if the Lawrence Arms and Uncle Tupelo got into a rowdy bar fight, look no further than this amazing record.
Band #2: Ghost Heart
• GHOST HEART (Grand Rapids, MI)
THE TUNNEL CD / LP - Friction Records (01/29/11)
——————————————————————————————————-
RIYL: Animal Collective • Local Natives • Grizzly Bear • Vampire Weekend • Pink Floyd
• BIO
——————————————————————————————————-
Ghost Heart performs accessible yet expansive rock songs that synthesize electronica, American folk, samples, tribal percussion, shoegaze guitar sounds and layered vocals to produce an effect that is at once joyously communal and deeply personal. The band’s sound has been described by the Detroit Metro Times as “a little of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend, only with more heart.” The Tunnel is instantly gratifying in some moments, challenging in others, but by any standard a unique listening experience.
Band #3: One Win Choice
• ONE WIN CHOICE (Philadelphia, PA)
CONVEYOR CD / LP - Jump Start Records (03/01/11)
——————————————————————————————————-
RIYL: Strike Anywhere • No Trigger • Comeback Kid • A Wilhelm Scream
• BIO
——————————————————————————————————-
Channeling the ethos and intensity of bands such as Strike Anywhere and Refused, and and combining melodic elements not unlike Rise Against or A Wilhelm Scream, Philly’s One Win Choice is a bastion of everything hardcore punk should strive to be. Conveyor burns with an underlying fire and passion, and the term “sonic annihilation” comes to mind more than once during the album’s 33 minute run time. Still, this explosive full-length also frames a group of individuals who have grown immensely as songwriters; these 13 tracks are meticulously crafted, underscored by thought-provoking lyrics and a palpable sincerity.
Band #4: Half Hearted Hero
• HALF HEARTED HERO (New Bedford, MA)
——————————————————————————————————-
RUNNING WATER 12″ EP - Animal Style Records (04/05/11)
RIYL: Transit • Small Brown Bike • The Starting Line • The Fullblast
STREAM: Bandcamp
• BIO
——————————————————————————————————-
Running Water finds Half Hearted Hero blasting through six cuts of infectious and introspective pop punk while wielding a razor-sharp edge and reveling in a much grittier tone than its peers. With ample energy and hooks galore, the band tips its proverbial cap to contemporaries such as Transit and The Starting Line, but it also explores varying tempos and unique song structures, giving nods to punk torchbearers such as Small Brown Bike and The Fullblast.
Mastered by Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room (Rise Against, A Wilhelm Scream, Propagandhi), Running Water is the follow-up to the Half Heart Hero’s 2009 full-length, Defining. Refining. The vinyl is limited to a pressing of 500 on three colorways (100 orange-red marble / 200 opaque olive green / 200 brown)
Band #5: The American Scene
• THE AMERICAN SCENE (Berkeley, CA)
——————————————————————————————————-
BY WAY OF INTRODUCTION CD - Pure Noise Records
RIYL: Jimmy Eat World, Mansions, The Starting Line
STREAM: Bandcamp
• BIO
——————————————————————————————————-
Comfortably rooted between the heart-on-sleeve songwriting of Mansions and the infectious, driving melodies of Jimmy Eat World, By Way Of Introduction finds newcomers The American Scene cranking out an incredibly confident and accomplished debut. Still these Bay Area kids manage to balance an uncommon maturity with well-timed bursts of intensity and an overall sense of fun more akin to the pop punk sect. Nine rock-solid songs that swim in warm textures and nostalgic tones while keeping things upbeat and airy, By Way Of Introduction radiates positive energy and comforts the soul. - Deal signed and announced earlier today – includes Star Wars franchise and all Lucasfilm operating businesses.
- Indiana Jones franchise rights ARE also included in this deal.
- Disney loves the Indiana Jones franchise, but it wasn’t included in the studio’s Lucasfilm valuation due to its “encumbrances” (meaning existing financial/legal involvement of Paramount).
- First project under the joint under Disney/Lucas partnership will be Star Wars: Episode 7 in 2015, followed by Episode 8 and Episode 9.
- Disney purchased “extensive and detailed” treatment for Episodes 7-9 as part of this deal which they “feel very good about.”
- Disney long term plan is to release a new live-action Star Wars film every 2-3 years – films may eventually explore entire 20,000 year time-span of the franchise.
- It’s Lucas’ plan to stay retired, but he will serve as creative consultant on new Star Wars films. Kathleen Kennedy will executive produce. Both are now sitting down with writers to discuss stories.
- Fox retains certain distribution rights to the existing Star Wars films but not the new franchise films going forward.
- Kennedy will serve as Lucasfilm president, reporting to Bob Iger at Disney.
- Disney plans to expand Star Wars brand into many new product categories and internationally.
- Star Wars brand will also be expanded into Disney parks, games and TV businesses.
- Iger feels Disney XD would be a good TV home for the franchise going forward.
- Star Wars interactive strategy: Disney will focus more on social and mobile platforms, opportunistically on consoles.
- Deal was 50% cash and 50% stock – $4.05 billion
- Disney believes Lucasfilm value is comparable to value of Marvel, but valuation is only based on Star Wars alone – value of other Lucasfilm intellectual properties are in addition to this.
- Disney plans to let ILM continue operating as it currently does.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has just officially “Ultra High-Definition” or “Ultra HD” as the new standard for display technology in the home. The term was approved yesterday by a vote of the organization’s Board of Industry Leaders.
The standard technically refers to displays with a minimum of 4K resolution (“at least” 3,840 x 2,160 pixel resolution) but may also be used to refer to 8K displays as well – the term “UHDTV” is used for both resolutions in Japan.
