Is it 1985? No! It’s The Expendables!

Stallone is bringing it like it’s 1985 with his new homage to 80′s action flicks, The Expendables.  Here’s the awesomely ridiculous extended trailer of machismo.

Watch it. Love it. I’m going to do me some sit ups.

The Expendables is currently slated to hit theaters on August 20, 2010.

Movie Review: Red Cliff (Chi bi)

rc-1

Red Cliff

This review is for John Woo’s original 4 hour vision: Red Cliff parts 1 and 2, NOT the butchered 2 and a half hour Western release.

Rating: ★★★★★

Directed By: John Woo

Starring: Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Fengyi Zhang, Chen Chang

Plot Synopsis:

After directing stylish action films such as The Killers and Face-Off, director John Woo turns to Chinese history for inspiration with Red Cliff. The Han Dynasty is facing its death in third century China, and the emperor raises a million-man army against two kingdoms that are hopelessly outmatched. This war film stars Tony Leung, reuniting with John Woo since Hard Boiled.

Review:

John Woo can be considered a legend of Asian Cinema.  Unfortunately, his dive into Western Cinema was more of a splat.  After the awesomeness of Hard Target and the success of Face-Off, he delivered clunkers such as Windtalkers, Mission Impossible II, and Paycheck.  People wondered where the magic went.  With Red Cliff, John Woo proves that his magic lies in China.  Red Cliff is John Woo’s most ambitious and visually stunning film to date.

Movie Review: Wolfhound

04

Wolfhound (Volkodav iz roda Serykh Psov)

Rating: ★★★★☆

Directed By: Nikolai Lebedev

Starring: Aleksandr Bukharov, Oksana Akinshina, Aleksandr Domogarov, Igor Petrenko

Plot Synopsis:

He was condemned to death, but survived to wreak revenge for the murder of his clan. The last member of the clan of the Grey Hounds became a fearless warrior by the name of Wolfhound. After cheating death in the mines, Wolfhound sets out on a journey with his constant companion, the Earthbound Bat. Wolfhound has but one desire – to destroy the Maneater, a merciless warrior who slaughtered the village of the Grey Hounds.

Review:

The 2006 Russian Fantasy film Wolfhound, based on the novel by Maria Semyonova, is a welcomed entry in the Fantasy genre. Not enough of these movies are made, and when they are they are pretty horrible (Dungeons and Dragons).  So, when one comes around and is actually pretty awesome, reading subtitles is the least of my concerns.  Finally released on DVD in 2009, Wolfhound is an awesome ride.  If you love movies like Conan, Beastmaster, Krull and Lord of the Rings, then you’ll adore this little film.

When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. Review:

Finally, we’re starting to hit the real films of 2009.  This summer has been plagued by pretty lousy “event” films.  Most of the pretty horrible and underwhelming.  While I enjoyed G. I. Joe for what it was, The Hurt Locker arrives and shows us what a real war movie is.  Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark, Point Break) gives us her best work to date with The Hurt Locker, bringing us the best modern warfare film since 2001′s Black Hawk Down.

New Badass Expendables Pictures Appear!

expendables-12
More badass photos from Stallone’s The Expendables makes me want to immediately start doing crunches in my cubicle.  Can I fit a weight set in there?

The Expendables is pretty close to wrapping principle photography and the images we’ve been getting have been awesome.  80′s macho heavy weights like Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren team up with a handful of other machismo actors like Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Eric Roberts.  Van Damme, what did you turn a role down in this?!?!?! There are even rumors of Schwarzenegger making an appearance.

Here are the pics.  The Expendables is scheduled to hit theatres on April 23rd, 2010.

Movie Trailer: Sherlock Holmes

Here’s the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s take on Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey, Jr. in the iconic role. Looks like they’re playing this up as a period action, buddy comedy? Not sure how I feel about it.

Plot Synopsis:

In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, Sherlock Holmes sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

Awesome New Photo From Stallone’s Expendables

Sylvester Stallone is plugging away at his action opus The Expendables with a smorgasbord of B-list action stars (“Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Dolph Lungren, Eric Roberts, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke just to name a handful).  I’m really looking forward to a resurgence of dumb fun action, and The Expendables looks really promising (sans the PG-13 rating).

Here’s a new photo of Sly Stallone attempting to board a sea plane.
